ABOUT US

PROVIDING H.O.P.E. TO YOUNG MOMS

Who We Serve: Our community-based maternal group home is designed to provide shelter and support to homeless pregnant and parenting women aged 18 to 24, along with their dependent children under the age of 5.

What We Do:  We provide long-term shelter for teen moms who would like to pursue career pathways.

Through our program, we take a look at what her current expenses are, and determine how we can work with her to help cover or supplement them so that she can reduce her employment from full-time to part-time, and focus her energy on school, self development, and caring for her child.

This would include living on-site in our shared dorm style housing to reduce living expenses (usually the biggest expense), furniture, shared meals, transportation, diapers, wipes, bottles, baby clothing, toiletries, hygiene, holidays and birthdays for mommy and child, leisure activities, self care, and anything else that she needs in order to live comfortably.

In addition to basic needs, we provide supportive services including but not limited to our "Weekly Support Circle/Girl Talk", "Big Sister 1-on-1 Mentorship", parenting skills, and financial literacy.

We also ask our residents to contribute to a household savings, which she receives in-full upon graduation from our program, so that she can purchase a home or rent with a healthy savings in place. She can live with us as long as she needs in order to finish school.

Why We're Different: Our home stands out through its intimate settings (no more than 6 rooms per home) that foster trust, support, and effective learning, enabling an environment where emotional well-being thrives. Our unique commitment to cultural relevance, led by a team of women who were once teen mothers themselves, ensures a nurturing atmosphere where relatable content meets personal experiences.

Our Commitment to Diversity: While our services remain open to all, our unwavering dedication to the BIPOC community drives tailored support, addressing disparities and empowering individuals through culturally sensitive approaches.

Our Vision: We envision a world where every young mother possesses the tools and resources needed to conquer challenges and flourish on their individual path through motherhood.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

Our 3-6 bedroom homes hold just a few families at a time. These intimate settings play a crucial role in supporting teen moms within a maternal group home for several reasons:

Privacy and Comfort

Intimate settings provide a sense of privacy and comfort for teen moms. Maternal group homes typically cater to young mothers who are navigating the challenges of parenthood while still being adolescents themselves. Creating an intimate environment helps them feel safe and secure, enabling them to open up about their concerns, fears, and experiences without fear of judgment.

Trust Building

Trust is a cornerstone of any supportive community, especially for vulnerable individuals like teen moms. Intimate settings foster trust among the residents and staff. When teen moms feel that they are in a space where they can express themselves openly, share their stories, and discuss their struggles, they are more likely to build trusting relationships with both their peers and the caregivers.

Supportive Peer Relationships

Intimate settings encourage deeper connections among the teen moms. Sharing common experiences in a smaller group setting allows them to bond more closely. They can relate to each other's challenges and successes, forming a strong support system that helps combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Focused Communication

In more intimate setting, communication can be more focused and personalized. This is particularly important in a maternal group home where staff and residents can address individual needs, provide tailored guidance, and offer emotional support. The smaller group size allows for better understanding of each teen mom's unique circumstances.

Effective Learning

Teen moms often require education on parenting skills, child development, and life skills. In an intimate setting, educators and counselors can offer targeted and effective learning experiences. This setting allows for interactive discussions, one-on-one attention, and hands-on practice, enhancing the teen moms' ability to absorb and apply the information.

Reduced Stigma

Intimate settings can help reduce the stigma associated with being a teen mom. When residents share their experiences and learn from each other, they realize that they are not alone in their journey. This can empower them to be more confident and proactive about their situation and future.

Emotional Well-being

Teen moms often grapple with emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. Intimate settings facilitate the creation of a safe space where they can express their emotions openly, receive empathy from their peers, and access professional mental health support.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a natural part of communal living, but in an intimate setting, conflicts can be addressed more effectively. With fewer individuals involved, conflicts can be resolved through open dialogue and mediation, helping to maintain a harmonious environment.

Intimate settings are important in maternal group homes for teen moms as they promote trust, support, learning, and emotional well-being. These settings create an environment where young mothers can develop vital skills, build lasting relationships, and feel empowered to overcome the challenges they face.
